What the health department recommends
Test your well every year for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids and pH. If you think something else may be in your water, test for that too. Always use a state-certified drinking water lab.
This is the county or state health agency's own advice, not ours.
Rules that apply
- Pennsylvania does not regulate private wells. Testing your well is up to you.
- In Chester County, you need written approval from the Chester County Health Department before you use a new well. A licensed well driller, a licensed pump installer or a trained worker from a DEP-certified lab must take the water samples, and a DEP-certified lab must test them.
The Chester County Health Department keeps a list of other certified labs, including two in Chester County (Kennett Square and Parkesburg). Call them for prices.
